At the Adobe MAX Conference in San Francisco, George Neill and Jerome Doran, experience architects for Adobe Consulting, argued that this couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact they claim that laziness is actually the mother of invention.

Turns out we are all wired for laziness. Humans have always spent a lot of time finding ways to do more with less. Innovations like the wheel and plumbing are just a few examples where their desire to kickback is still benefiting us today. With the advent of the world-wide-web and rich Internet applications (RIAs), taking a closer look at laziness helps us better understand user behavior and create ways for them complete tasks with a minimum of difficulty and friction. Usually when we are trying to create an engaging experience (be it online or off) we look at what users are doing, or what they are asking for and not at the things they don't do: what shortcuts they take, what corners they cut, what cheats they create. Ironically, these are often the areas in which we can really innovate and stand out.

When creating engaging experiences, it's important to step back and take a look at the big picture — before you get too focused on building something right, be sure you are building the right thing. Observe how people interact with something, and how they don't. Those behaviors that we're tempted to write off as "just being lazy" could actually help you identify an opportunity for innovation.

Nice work.

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;
